 PARTY IDEAS

With so many options for parties available and so much pressure to do something different I've found that what should be a fantastic occasion can become a really stressful event.  On the other hand, you know that your child is going to remember their birthday party for always, so why not go to town.

The first thing to do is set a budget and stick to it.  To get you through the mountain of options, I've put together just a few ideas to help you organise the best party ever!

One Year Olds

A very special occasion but probably best to keep it to a home party for family and friends.  Have a party tea with finger foods suitable for small babies and children.  Keep the party around 1 to 1 1/2 hours to aviod tears.  Your baby may be overwhelmed by all the noise and people and will probably spend the majority of the party playing with the wrapping paper and birthday cake!

Two Year Olds

At this age children enjoy dancing, balloons, music and toys.  Maybe hire a hall or invite a couple of friends to your home.  Toddlers love to play with ball pits, slides, seesaws and toys.  You could lay out a huge piece of paper on the floor (rolls of lining paper works very well) and allow the children to express themselves artistically.

Make sure there are plenty of helpers to help with toilet visits and tears.  Most parents will stay with their child at this age, so remember to provide additional nibbles and drinks.  Again, keep the party short, provide a party tea, have lots of music and watch them play!

Three, Four, Five and Six Years Olds

Now this is where the fun really begins.  Children at this age are already brand aware and know if they like Spiderman or Disney Princess.  If you are holding the party at home or in a hired hall, themed parties are good, for example Princesses, Pirates, Super Heroes, Fairies or Football.  Download some colouring sheets from the internet and lay out some crayons for them to colour in as they arrive at the party. Hiring an entertainer is a great way to take the pressure off.  If you are feeling brave and have enough space, hiring a bouncy castle can be an excellent way to tire the children out.  Make sure you leave the birthday tea until afterwards though!

Your local leisure centre will undoubtedly hold a number of sporty parties, from trampolining to football and soft play centres are always keen to accomodate large numbers of children. Other party ideas include craft parties, pottery parties, cooking parties (try www.splatcooking.co.uk), pamper parties, drama parties (www.littleactorstheatre.com) and go karting parties (www.go-kiddy-karts.co.uk).

Seven, Eight and Nine Years Olds

Tastes become a bit more sophisticated at this age.  Now might be the time to start limiting the number of children invited so that you don't require a remortgage to hold the event.  Suggest a trip to the bowling alley or cinema.  Maybe an ice-skating party or a trip to the local swimming pool.  Discos and pamper parties are popular amongst the girls.  A really different idea would be to hold a treasure hunt.  You could either set it up yourself or visit www.huntfun.co.uk to find a local one.  Craft parties are still popular at this age.  Other suggestions include hiring a fire engine complete with uniformed crew (www.bigredfireengine.co.uk) or even a sleepover.

Ten Year Olds +

Are ten year olds too cool to have a party?  The days are long gone that a bit of jelly and some musical chairs will suffice, although I wouldn't put it past them to shed a few tired and emotional tears on their big day.  How about hiring a limousine, running a photo shoot or visiting the cinema?  Go-karting would go down really well, or how about a tank party, paintballing or a Ghost Hunters Party (www.spookydos.co.uk).
